Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)

Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is a scientific method for changing socially significant behaviors. Treatments that are rooted in the principles of ABA aim to teach individuals appropriate social behaviors, while decreasing the individual’s engagement in problem

Using the methods of ABA, we tailor each client’s program to meet his/her individual needs. After an initial assessment, we are able to pinpoint specific target goals to help the individual achieve/master various skills. Goals can target a variety of skills such as (but not limited to):

  • Positive behaviors (e.g., compliance, on-task)
  • Communication
  • Socialization
  • Self-care
  • Play and leisure
  • Learning and academics

Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT)

Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) is a method rooted in the principles of ABA. PRT addresses core symptoms in order to yield positive behavior changes. This type of therapy is implemented in the natural environment and utilizes the client’s motivation as the foundation of the treatment.

During the initial assessment, reinforcer’s are identified in order to develop a program that is highly motivating for the client. Specific target goals

(as they relate to the pivotal areas) are then co-constructed with the parent/guardian/client.

Pivotal areas to target include:

  • Motivation
  • Response to multiple cues
  • Initiation
  • Self-management
  • Empathy (emerging research)

Functional Behavior Assessment

A functional behavior assessment (FBA) is a scientific process for identifying the root cause(s) of a target behavior(s). Through the FBA process we will be able to answer the following questions:

  • When does the target behavior occur?
  • How often does the target behavior occur?
  • Are there environmental variables that contribute to the engagement in the target behavior ?
  • Why does the target behavior occur?

The FBA process consists of 2-3 stages:

Stage 1: Indirect assessment

  • Meet with parent/guardian/teacher
  • Conduct interviews
  • Record review (if warranted)

Stage 2: Direct assessment

  • Direct observations
  • Take data on environmental factors

Stage 3: Functional Analysis (if warranted)

  • We test our hypothesis in a controlled manner
